Box Office Report: Underworld on Top of the World

Although it's no doubt inflated due to 3D and IMAX sales, the latest in the too-long-running Underworld franchise took top honors in the box office this weekend, holding off the likes of Red Tails and the new Steven Soderbergh action flick Haywire. The emotional Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close came out of nowhere to crack the top 5 after finally getting a full wide release after being limited for about a month now. Also of note:the 3D rerelease of Beauty and the Beast is proving that it doesn't have the staying power that its feline counterpart, The Lion King did (although it still almost overtook Haywire this week), while the old fogies of the box office world, M:I4, Sherlock Holmes, and Dragon Tattoo are still holding on to those top 10 spots, the latter of which has now been officially put into the black which could start raising questions of whether or not the rest of the book trilogy will get the film treatment. Here's the rundown:

1. Underwold Awakening- $25.4 million (New Release)
2. Red Tails - $19.1 million (New Release)
3. Contraband - $12.2 million ($46.1 million total)
4. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - $10.5 million ($11.2 million total)
5. Haywire - $9.0 million (New Release)
6. Beauty and the Beast (3D) - $8.6 million ($33.4 million total)
7. Joyful Noise - $6.1 million ($21.9 million total)
8. Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol - $5.5 million ($197.3 million total)
9. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - $4.8 million ($178.6 million total)
10. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) - $3.8 million ($94.8 million total)
